Find the freedom to truly live
Welcome
Katrina Carter
Psychotherapist & Counsellor
Hi I'm Katrina and I'd like to welcome you to The Counselling & Therapy Place.
It can be daunting trying to find the right support when a decision has been made that you or a family member would like to see a counsellor or therapist. People have many reasons for making the decision, but finding someone you feel comfortable with and trust will help you find your way can be hard.
In opening The Counselling & Therapy Place, I wanted to provide a place where people of all ages can find somebody who will help them hold the hope at times when it might not feel like there is any, or where they can come before things get too hard.
How I work with people
My approach to supporting people is person centred, which means listening to each individual and working with them in a way that is comfortable and tailored for them. Acknowledging that each person is the expert in their own life (even though they may not feel like it), I work in collaboration with them to facilitate change. Using an integrative approach, I draw on many therapeutic models according to the needs of the person I am working with.
My work is trauma informed, understanding that because of our experiences, our minds, bodies and brains have developed to cope. Our ways of coping get us through those times, but eventually these ways of being can get in the way. Sometimes we're not even aware that this is what has happened for us and our minds and bodies draw attention to it in all sorts of ways, whether it's through feelings of anxiety, anger, hopelessness, depression, not feeling, body aches and pains, and so on. It's our minds way of telling us we need to take a look.
Experience
I have worked with people of all ages, from a wide range of backgrounds with nearly all types of distress, including anxiety, depression, complex trauma, survivors of childhood abuse, grief, domestic and family violence, mental health diagnoses, dependencies and many, many more. I have worked as a counsellor in not for profit organisations for a number of years, with people in the corporate sector, as well as youth outreach. However, my most rewarding experience and greatest gift in life, has been being a parent to four beautiful children who are now adults. This has been my greatest adventure, challenge and source of growth, providing me with the greatest learning of all.
I am a sessional academic at Western Sydney University teaching in the postgraduate Psychotherapy and Counselling program, supporting future counsellors and therapists. I have a Master of Psychotherapy & Counselling with Distinction, Graduate Diploma of Counselling with Distinction, along with a Bachelor of Commerce (Management) degree and am a member of the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA).
